There has been a slew of new and unconfirmed leaks that are set to be revealed for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Among the details is an apparent battle royale loading screen that rejuvenates the months-long rumors that a battle royale mode may still be a part of the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launched on October 24, 2019, with a standard multiplayer, a spec-ops co-op mode, and a well-reviewed single-player campaign. What was missing, for many fans, was a battle royale mode.

This new leaked image shows off a possible loading screen for the battle royale mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that players have been waiting for. Specifically, the image shows mountains in the distance, towers plumbing smoke into the air, slight forestation, roadways, factories, and a waterway that may point to water warfare similar to Blackout.

While the Call of Duty series hasn’t traditionally had a battle royale mode, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 had its very successful Blackout mode. Perhaps partially because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is lacking a battle royale, Blackout is still being played today regularly. The battle royale genre has quickly taken over since the likes of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Fortnite, Apex Legends, and the aforementioned Blackout.

Leaks started flowing about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare having a battle royale since the summer of 2019. They haven’t stopped since. And although the leaks started with the idea of the battle royale being a possible launch mode, most settled with the idea that the mode would be a free-to-play expansion in early 2020, and that the mode is being worked on by Raven Software.

Fans have been waiting with for a fresh battle royale experience within the world of Call of Duty. At the moment, Blackout is fun, but it’s over a year old and Call of Duty: Mobile can only do so much. For many players, a standard multiplayer shooter isn’t enough anymore and the time for battle royale is now.

The original timeframe for Season Two, and thus the possibility for a battle royale for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was late January, but that date was pushed back to February 11, 2020. The exact reason is unknown, but if the battle royal rumors are true, it’s fair to speculate that extra time was needed for the new mode. Rumors also point to the update being quite large, which could account for a battle royale.

If the leaks are true for Season Two of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, fans should be quite pleased with what is in store.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
