Ever since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the Call of Duty franchise has had a timed-exclusivity deal for DLC with one platform or the other. For the Xbox 360 era, Call of Duty DLC released on Microsoft’s console first, but more recent games have seen DLC launch on PS4 before anywhere else. That will change with the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, as it’s been announced that the post-launch DLC maps and modes will release for all platforms simultaneously.

It seems the main reason why Activision has decided to do away with timed-exclusive DLC maps for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is because of the game’s cross-play support. Cross-play has been a big selling point for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer fans, and having timed-exclusive DLC would split up the community.

While PlayStation 4 users will no longer get DLC maps before users on other platforms, that doesn’t mean the Call of Duty/PlayStation partnership is going away completely. On the contrary, PS4 gamers will still get a “Day 1 Advantage,” though Activision has yet to detail exactly what that will entail.

Besides multiplayer maps and modes, Activision has also revealed that new Spec Ops missions will be released for all platforms at the same time as well. Spec Ops, for the uninitiated, is the returning co-op mode that first appeared in Modern Warfare 2. The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Spec Ops hasn’t been seen much yet, but fans can expect a full reveal of the mode come October 5.

So far, Activision has made a lot of popular decisions when it comes to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Getting rid of timed-exclusive DLC maps will definitely be appreciated by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players on PC and Xbox One, and many are also excited about the fact that the game won’t have a season pass. All of the post-launch DLC maps and modes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be added for free, which is also a way Activision can keep from splitting up the community.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches on October 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
