As of today, Activision has finally announced that Call of Duty: Warzone will release to the public on March 10, as predicted by multiple past leaks. However, despite all the good news coming in, there is a catch.

Call of Duty: Warzone will only allow players to queue up as trios, meaning anyone looking to enter the game mode solo or in duos will be unable to do so. If they attempt to join in these two ways, they’ll have to use Warzone’s Squad Fill setting, which will always fill out their team to three. So anyone entering solo will be paired with two random partners while anyone entering in duos will receive one.

Infinity Ward states that it went this route to “ensures quality matchmaking.” Instead of splitting the matchmaking between multiple pools created by all the different combinations available between solos, duos, and trios, the developer decided it would be easier to keep everything in threes. So, then, Warzone will only feature 150 players divided up into 50 teams of three – at least, it only will at release.

Whether or not Warzone will stay like this remains unknown. Infinity Ward may be able to figure something out in the future, but for now, Warzone will only feature trios, and it will be like this across both its Plunder and standard Battle Royale game types.

With all of that said, players should note that using the Squad Fill setting won’t provide them with a separate matchmaking pool. They will still be paired up against teams of players that have queued up naturally as trios. So anyone that decides to go this route will, in a way, be putting themselves at a disadvantage, as anyone queueing as a trio will have a type of coordination and communication available to them that Squad Fill players won’t.

Some players are understandably unhappy about this for a variety of different reasons: not everyone has friends they can bring into the Warzone. Not everyone wants to wait for their friends to play Warzone, and some people want to win the game on their own merit rather than pass or fail through teamwork. Many have also noted that the crossplay feature Warzone utilizes should provide more than enough players to create separate pools for both solo and duo queues. Again, though, this decision isn’t set in stone. Infinity Ward may find a solution in the future.

Call of Duty: Warzone launches on March 10 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
