Until recently, the Tokyo Game Show has not been a convention many Westerners get excited about. Oh, how things have changed.

This year’s Tokyo Game Show is shaping up to be more massive than ever.  We already know the long-awaited The Last Guardian will be making an appearance at the show, but the most exciting news at TGS may come from games we aren’t yet aware of. Capcom has hinted that they will reveal four new games at TGS this fall.

Check out the tweet from Capcom Europe below:

This news seems hard to believe, but don’t be too quick to write it off. Capcom has already told us they’re shortening the development cycles on all games and plan to increase their yearly output substantially. If the news is true, gamers may see a remarkable number of Triple-A games released within a short time period.

So, what games could Capcom have in the works? Let’s start with what we do know. They are releasing Dead Rising 2 this fall, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in the spring of next year, and presumably Mega Man Universe soon after.

Even after those big releases, Capcom still has several high profile franchises it could update. To me, the most likely announcement is Resident Evil 6. Keiji Inafune, Capcom’s global head of research and development, has already stated that they “want Resident Evil 6 to hit the market as soon as possible.” If they do announce new games, I’m confident Resident Evil 6 will be one of them.

A sequel to Devil May Cry 4 is also a possibility. It has been over two years since the last Devil May Cry, and if you look at Capcom’s release pattern, that means we are about due for a new one. I personally, would love to get another installment in the Devil May Cry series. They have always been the fun, video game equivalent of a summer blockbuster.

Capcom could also surprise us with a new entry in the recently resurrected Bionic Commando series. Bionic Commando made its return in two forms. First with Bionic Commando Rearmed, a spectacular 2.5D downloadable game, and then Bionic Commando, an action-adventure game for consoles. I would be pleased with a sequel or spiritual successor to either game.

Bionic Commando Rearmed is a remake of the original Bionic Commando and a great example of how to update classic franchises. Capcom could really score some points with fans if they gave the Rearmed treatment to some of their other classic series. Imagine a brand new Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Ducktales, or U.N. Squadron! Alternatively, they could create sequels to more recent games such as Viewtiful Joe, Dino Crisis, or Zak and Wiki.

Whatever they have up their sleeve, I’m sure that Capcom will deliver, and that the Tokyo Game Show as a whole will be filled with exciting announcements.

What do you think the chances are that Capcom will unveil four new games at TGS? Any guesses as to what they might be?

The Tokyo Game Show runs September 16-19.
