In a recent interview with CD Projekt Red about the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, OnMSFT’s Brad Stephenson sat down with Head of Studio John Mamais. The interview covered a ton of information about the game, including what the development process was like and when the company had originally planned to release the title.
However, it’s how the interview closed out with comments from Mamais that imply that what we’ve seen so far still isn’t the full extent of what Cyberpunk 2077 is capable of. According to Mamais, the Cyberpunk 2077 engine performs beautifully when everything is working and so he suggests players have their best tech available to enjoy the full 4K experience.
In the interview, Mamais mentions a real-time global illumination system that adds to the visuals in a way that hasn’t yet been shown off in trailers or events. As some perceptive fans have pointed out, with clips like Godfall’s early footage, how lighting effects can make all the difference with high-quality, next-gen graphics. Similarly, there are even more features that simply don’t translate into trailers or clips of gameplay from conventions and game shows.
In addition to the new lighting system, the audio system that an audio engineer is reportedly working on will give dynamic sound to the environment, changing based on where the player is standing. This should make players with high-quality headphones or surround sound systems happy, as the sounds are more affected by the environment than in previous engines. Thankfully, CD Projekt Red has a lot more time to put into these systems that will surely justify Cyberpunk 2077’s delay with an even more immersive gameplay experience than previously available.
The rest of the interview has a number of insights on the development process of Cyberpunk 2077, including how long development has been going on and how the team was brought in at the end of The Witcher 3’s crunch. By all accounts, Cyberpunk 2077 may turn out to be one of the longest-running projects in CD Projekt Red’s history after years of silence and delays. However, with the game hopefully coming out later this year, players can finally get their hands on the long-awaited title.
Then again, games have been getting hit with delays for surprising reasons lately, so it may even be slightly longer than expected before Cyberpunk 2077 finally hits store shelves.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on September 17th, 2020, for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
