World of Warcraft Classic is home to some of the most artistic renditions of fantasy weapons ever created. You can tell by the detail put into some of these weapons that the art and design team truly gave it their best effort to create jaw-droppingly beautiful, detailed items. And, in many cases, they succeeded with flying colors. So much so that, even today, retail WoW players will jump through hoops to obtain copies of these weapons.
While the hoops retail players have to go through to obtain these skins may be marginally smaller than what it took back in 2004, the result remains the same. In order for everyone to know just how badass your character is, you’ve got to look the part. Whether your goal is to turn some heads or crack them open, it’s as easy as equipping one of these bad boys.
10 Quel’Serrar
Obtained through a quest that requires you to heat a blade in the fiery breath of a living dragon and temper its steel with the blood flowing out of her stilled heart, Quel’Serrar is every bit as epic as the quest required to claim it. It’s got one of the widest blades of any single-handed weapon in the game, making any enchant thrown onto it that much more noticeable. The runic symbols that gleam along the center of the blade, as well as its golden crossguard and pommel, give it a regal presence, like a blade befitting a king.
9 Teebu’s Blazing Longsword
A lightsaber? In World of Warcraft? You bet. Popularized by the original game’s box art, Teebu’s Blazing Longsword is a BoE drop from trash mobs in Molten Core. It’s got a drop rate of 0.01%, so chances are you’ll never actually see one. However, if you’ve got a penchant for wielding a lightsaber, there is an alternative version of the weapon in blue.
The Argent Crusader is a quest reward from a chain that starts with the quest The Truth Comes Crashing Down. You can pick this quest up after killing the demon Balnazzar at the end of Stratholme live side.
8 Perdition’s Blade
The teardrop of the fire lord. Perdition’s Blade glows more brilliantly than a fiery enchant, making it near impossible for passersby to miss. The weapon’s black leather-wrapped golden hilt transitions beautifully into a uniquely shaped blade that glows with shades of red, yellow, and orange. It drops off of Ragnaros at a 14.81% rate and is one of the best daggers available to Rogues through most of Classic’s content. Good luck on winning the roll for this item. When you do, you’ll be rewarded with the jealousy of your rogue guildies.
7 Dark Edge of Insanity
This item drops off of the end boss of Ahn’Qiraj 40, the old god C’Thun. This being the case, it won’t be in the game until Phase 5 releases later this year. But talk about a literal eye turner. The putrid purple yellow eye at the Axes center actually looks around and blinks as you’re wielding it. Creepy. The proc on this weapon makes it near unbeatable for PvP, as the 3-second stun persists through damage dealt.
6 Maladath, Runed Blade of the Black Dragonflight
When looking at the weapons that drop from Blackwing Lair, it’s quickly apparent that the designers used a heavy dragon theme. Which makes sense, seeing as the Lord of Blackrock is a dragon. Sorry about the 16-year-old spoiler.
The golden hilt of this sword is shaped into that of a dragon’s open maw. The weapon’s blade spills out of the dragon’s mouth like a tongue. Rubies are embedded into the dragon’s skull, giving it glaring red eyes. All in all, it’s a breathtaking design and one of the best swords in the game to boot.
5 Ashkhandi, Greatsword of the Brotherhood
Why settle for a sword with one dragon when you could have a sword with two? Ashkhandi, colloquially known as asscandy, features the biggest two-handed weapon model in the game. Its blood-red blade runs the length of your character’s entire body, or more if you’re a dwarf or gnome. The twin dragons that make up the sword’s crossguard are unmistakable, and a huge crimson dragon eye is embedded at the sword’s center. Due to its slow speed and the enormous amount of stamina on it, Ashkhandi is one of the best PvP weapons in the game. Lastly, there’s a nice bit of flavor text on the weapon’s tooltip, alluding to the identity of the sword’s previous wielder.
4 Benediction / Anathema
If you were forced into a healing role by your friends or guild, here’s your ultimate payoff granted you were smart enough to go priest. Benediction screams holier than thou, which is a just reward for a class so humble. The iconic crosslike shape at the staff’s apex makes it clear that your heals mean business.
The huge reddish gem at the crosses center also produces a unique glowing animation, unlike any found elsewhere in the game. The staff also transforms into its shadow priest counterpart, Anathema, which is every bit as imposing. Two beautiful weapons for the price of one. Talk about a bargain.
3 Corrupted Ashbringer
Unlike the other weapons on this list, the Corrupted Ashbringer model is actually no longer obtainable by retail players. As a result, it’s earned quite a bit of notoriety. But that’s not the only reason for this lionized weapon’s popularity. There’s quite a bit of lore that goes alongside the weapon’s creation, so much so that wielding it allows you to witness a special interaction when entering the Scarlet Monastery Cathedral. The Corrupted Ashbringer’s sick looks will certainly leave your friend’s mouths watering. But you may find obtaining this blade difficult. It drops off of the Four Horsemen, one of the last bosses of the final raid, Naxxramas. Don’t expect to see this weapon anytime soon.
2 Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
Did someone say Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker? When we specified earlier that Ashkhandi had the biggest two-hander model, you probably thought there must be another two-hander that’s even bigger. Thunderfury does have a bigger model, but it’s a one-hander, believe it or not. There are only 3 legendary rarity weapons in the game, and Thunderfury is the most well-known. Its model is absolutely stunning, with two bone-like protrusions that serve as a blade jutting from its monstrous hilt. In between them sparks a mote of blue electricity. Thunderfury is so good that players continued to use it up until the last raid of the Burning Crusade expansion. If it’s better than level 70 items, imagine the insurmountable gap between Thunderfury and level 60 ones.
1 Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
Though it may not be the most economical nor the best weapon in the game, Sulfuras is undoubtedly the most iconic. The recipe materials required to craft the weapon are expensive enough to necessitate an entire guild’s help in purchasing them. And that’s without mentioning the horrendous 3% drop rate on the needed Eye of Sulfuras, which can only be looted from Ragnaros. Despite these odds, if you are able to craft the Hand of Ragnaros people on your server will remember your name. The weapon is resplendent, glowing with the etched runes of the elemental lord of fire. Crafting Sulfuras may prevent your guild from obtaining the much more useful Thunderfury for a while, but it’s the price you must be willing to pay for internet fame.
