Back in May, developer Ion Lands added a first-person mode to its cyberpunk indie game Cloudpunk. However, it was only for when you decided to leave your futuristic delivery vehicle and hit the mean streets. For a game about dreamily flying a taxi past neon-lit buildings, it seemed like a bit of a missed opportunity. After all, the flying is the game’s most visually interesting feature. Well, it might have taken some time, but Ion Lands has made up for it. In the latest update, Cloudpunk now has a first-person cockpit view.
This is, without question, the best way to experience Cloudpunk‘s beautiful dystopian world. I’ve actually held off on playing the game, despite my love of the genre. Watching the cockpit view trailer, however, convinces me that the wait will be well worth it. If you haven’t experienced Cloudpunk yet, I can’t think of a better time.
The update adds the cockpit view, as well as a little more. While flying, you can change it to a first-person mode, giving you 180° of camera movement to look at the buildings as they float past, as well as the busy streets below. The update also includes interactable apartment upgrades, along with improvements to camera controls and optimization.
“We were so pleased that the world we created resonated with so many people,” said Marko Dieckmann, studio head of Ion Lands. “This update will allow them to really immerse themselves in the game’s environments in a way we hope they enjoy just as much as seeing it for the first time.”
A nice view
Alright, does anyone else have this trailer on repeat? No? I know it’s not just me. It features the track Venger from the synthwave artist Perturbator. I won’t blame you for having to play the trailer more than once. The music video is also nice and cyberpunk-y, so it’s a good fit. Just don’t play it on your Twitch stream, lest you incur the wrath of the DMCA Matrix sentinels.
Cloudpunk puts you the shoes of a courier driver braving the dangers of the vast city of Nivalis. We liked the game when it came out, giving it a solid 8 out of 10. In the review by Nicholas Montegriffo, he said “Cloudpunk absolutely nails the cyberpunk aesthetic, but it backs up style with substance. A thoughtful and sensitive story, interesting characters, and some challenging environmental puzzles all make its attractive setting really fun to play around in, even if there are limitations.”
