Bandai Namco has released Code Vein’s first DLC pack, Hellfire Knight, on all platforms today. In a trailer posted yesterday, the publisher went over what players could expect from this latest story expansion. It seems to follow a mold similar to Dark Souls in that this is all side content instead of regular campaign stuff.
In Hellfire Knight, players will be teaming up with other Revenants to tackle new bosses and grab new items. A ton of alternate costume parts are also being added to the rather robust character creator. This is all along with general bug fixes and stability updates to make Code Vein run smoother.
Anyone that owns the “Deluxe Edition” or season pass will receive this at no extra charge. It can be purchased individually for $9.99. It seems rather substantial, so that price isn’t too bad. Going the season pass route, you’ll also nab two additional episodes over the next two months. Those will likely be just as big.
If you’re not interested in this DLC, update 1.30 will add a few quality of life improvements. Mistles will now allow you to teleport between different Depths maps. You’ll still need to find a Mistle to make use of this, but it will be nice for saving some time as you’re grinding your gear.
As for whether or not you should grab this (or even boot up Code Vein to try it), current user reviews on Steam don’t paint a nice picture. Many users are complaining that the additional area is “pathetically short,” and others still say the new Blood Veils are reskins of existing ones. It doesn’t sound appetizing.
Still, more Code Vein can’t be that bad of a thing. It might be wiser to either wait for the entire season pass or grab the DLC on a discount. Even Dark Souls’ had a tough time justifying its first DLC pack and that content was actually good. It’s toughing adding extra areas and enemies to a game that is so dependent on strategy and world design. Bandai Namco likely bit off more than it could chew with this one.
