While we’re waiting for the sixth installment in The Elder Scrolls franchise, we can finally get more of the world - and no, it’s not another Skyrim mod. The Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms is a tabletop miniature adaptation that features all of the best parts of the series: heroes, draugr, crypts, and treasures - but also good ol’ Stormcloak vs Imperial war.
The skirmish wargame was made by Modiphius, the creators of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare. However, it doesn’t really have a storyline or setting on its own. Instead, the player uses physical figurines to tactically play out battles. If your friends are busy, worry not: the game is also playable solo, as well as co-op vs AI. It also boasts a traditional battle mode against friends.
The game has a lot of content and includes 228 cards, of which five are Hero Cards, six are Faction Reference Cards, 13 are Follower and Adversary Cards, and the rest – over 200 – are Quests, Events, Traps, Items, and Spell Cards. There’s also a 44 page quest book with 12 missions. However, players should be prepared for quite a learning curve, as evidenced by the 104-page complete core rulebook. For who would rather jump into the game, there is also a 16-page Escape From Helgen quickstart guide.
The game also includes 13 custom dice - which includes 1 white skill dice, 3 green accuracy dice, 3 black, 3 red and 3 yellow Effect dice, along with 2 die cut counter sheets. Though some set bundles are cheaper than others, not all of them include miniatures, which are available separately. Most starter set bundles either include hard plastic or resin figurines (with resin being more expensive), which contain the core rules, Imperial and Stormcloak figurines, a Dragonborn Ethereal figurine, as well as the Bleak Falls Barrow Delve. All of the figurines come unpainted and unassembled.
All of the sets are available for preoder on the Modiphius website and are expected to ship mid April 2020. The team also promises a host of other accessories, such as scenery, metal tokens, deluxe dice bags, settlement journals, and more.
