Control from Remedy Entertainment launches on August 27, and as we explained in our Control review, it’s a short but consistently entertaining action game. While the game’s length may not be an issue for many players, there are those who will be turned off by just how quickly they will be able to get through the main story, and after having beaten the game ourselves, we can confirm that it really doesn’t take long at all.

Previously, Remedy Entertainment claimed that Control would likely take between 10-15 hours for an average playthrough, and around 20 hours for someone who wants to complete everything. This is actually a bit of an exaggeration. In our initial playthrough of Control, it took less than 10 hours to beat the game’s 10 main story missions, and that included some side quests as well. There were also a few stretches where we were simply lost and were mindlessly exploring the Old House trying to figure out where to go, which certainly added on to our playthrough. In total, it took around eight hours for us to finish Control for the first time.

After beating the story, we had also unlocked most of the achievements, the rest coming easy just by completing side quests and the like. It seems feasible that someone could basically 100% Control in less than 15 hours. Of course, skill factor will also play a role, not to mention how often players get lost when trying to figure out where they need to go next.

It’s true that Control is short, but its length doesn’t really matter all that much. Many games tend to artificially lengthen themselves with time wasters because they don’t want to be labeled as “short,” but as we pointed out in our Control review, Remedy’s latest is better off stripping out the filler. The result is a game that is consistently entertaining from start to finish, as opposed to one that is fun most of the time but has boring stretches of busywork thrown in just so it takes longer to reach the end.

Those that judge a game’s value by the amount of gameplay it will offer as opposed to the quality of the gameplay may want to think twice about picking up Control, since it can be fully completed in around 15 hours or less. Everyone else shouldn’t hesitate to pick up the game and check out all its bizarre Stanley Kubrick influences for themselves.

Control launches on August 27 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
