Whether you missed the last episode of Critical Role or you just need a refresher to prepare for Thursday’s episode, this recap will give you a bit of guidance so you can slide into the new episode this week with minimal confusion.
Spoilers ahead up to Campaign 2 Episode 91!
Nott And The Beacons
The Luxon Beacons owned by the Kryn Dynasty serve as a never-ending reincarnation for the Xhorhasian people who are consecuted (a process that allows you to be reincarnated). We recently learned from Essek Thelyss (a mage for the Dynasty) that when a person is consecuted and dies within the vicinity of a Beacon, they are reborn as a baby. When the child grows up, they start to remember their previous life and then make their way to Rosohna, the capital of Xhorhas, so they can fully regain their past memories. We also learn that Essek is in his first lifetime.
Nott the Brave shows interest in this idea of being consecuted, as she has been trying to return to her halfling form since she was turned into a goblin by a mage allying herself with a goblin clan local to her original hometown of Felderwin. There is a chance at being born into a new body if you are consecuted, and Nott is desperate for any way out of her goblin body.
Essek offers to help Caleb Widogast to create a transmutation spell to transfer Nott into a new body. The spell is formed, with the entirety of the Mighty Nein aiding in the collection of the materials needed to complete the spell. However, as Caleb casts the spell, a shadowy presence appears and stops the spell as a result of the curse Nott was placed under.
War Time FaceTime
Since the showdown with Obann and his gang trying to break Tharizdun (the Chained Oblivion) from his chains at the cathedral in Rexxentrum, it was revealed to the Empire that one of their own, Vence, had been aiding Obann. Similarly, on the Xhorhasian Dynasty side, a spy named Adeen had seemingly been mind-controlled, similarly to Yasha, to do Tharizdun’s bidding. The involvement of these traitors on both sides of the war allows for negotiations peace talks between King Dwendal and the Bright Queen to progress, as both sides have been tricked and hurt by this cultish third party.
The Mighty Nein, having aided both sides in trying to come to a peaceful end to the war, insist on being there for the talk. This meeting is supposed to occur in four in-game weeks on the sea east of Nicodranas since it is a neutral area. The plan is to bring both traitors and for the leaders of each nation to speak via magic mirrors (much like FaceTime).
So what can we expect in the next episode? Well since the peace meeting between nations is quickly approaching, and so is TravelerCon (five in-game weeks away), the Mighty Nein have time to prepare for both of these endeavors. They’ll need to prepare for traveling, mainly by sea, and prepare for the possibility of fighting if the peace talks are sabotaged or interrupted.
In addition, now that we know Nott was cursed by that mage, Caleb or Essek might look into breaking the curse or locating the mage (or both). The Mighty Nein also has a lot to learn from Essek, who in the previous episode has been a huge help and source of knowledge for them. Perhaps they will speak to him more in this next episode.
