Eden Falling is promising to bring back that classic RPG feel in a brand new post-apocalyptic package complete with permadeath.

So what happens when the Earth gets hit by a space rock that disperses alien fungal spores all over the place? The end of the world is what happens. Everybody dies, cities fall, and creatures mutate into horrible monsters. It’s a post-apocalyptic trope that serves as the launching pad for Razor Edge Games’ debut title.

It’s called Eden Falling, and fans of the classic Fallout games will find a lot in common in both the post-apocalyptic plot and the scavenging for supplies and lost technology. “As one of the survivors, join rallied factions & work together to bring humanity back from the brink of extinction.”

So what makes Eden Falling different from Fallout or Wasteland? First, there’s the cyberpunk aesthetic. Tons of neon lighting to be found in the early game trailers on Steam, and the super high-tech gizmos superimposed with very low-tech items like torches and clubs.

Second, Eden Falling is a non-linear open-world RPG that lets you play alone or online with a group of friends. The world is persistent, so you won’t have to worry about things shifting around on you. And with 30,000 destinations, you won’t run out of places to explore anytime soon.

There’s also permadeath. When your character dies, they’re gone for good. However, if you find a companion in your travels, you can bequeath your stuff (or at least, the stuff not on your bullet-riddled corpse) to your new companion who will continue your journey.

Keeping you from dying is a “Destiny Point” system that lets you spend Destiny Points to help you pluck the very strings of fate. You can use Destiny Points to retry failed actions, hit missed shots, or avoid critical hits. Getting them won’t be easy though, as they’re typically only handed out after defeating powerful enemies or completing difficult contracts.

Eden Falling also features character aging that actually changes your character’s attributes, a classless skill system for maximum customizability, factions and a reputation system with various groups of survivors, and weapons ranging from wooden clubs to advanced plasma rifles.
