Crytek has announced that Mattis Engström, former game director of Hitman 3, will lead work on upcoming shooter Crysis 4.

As spotted by PC Gamer, the company announced the appointment on the game’s official Twitter account. Engström had previously worked at IO Interactive on the Hitman series since its 2017 reboot. He worked as a level designer on the first two instalments of the Hitman: World of Assassination Trilogy before his promotion on the 2021 entry.

Engström has also previously worked at Ubisoft including – semi-relatedly – a stint as a level designer on Far Cry 3. In case you’re unaware, Crytek were the original creators of the first Far Cry. However, they parted ways with the series, leaving it with Ubisoft after the first game. Crysis was the studio’s first game following this split.

It still sounds like it’s early days for Crysis 4 so far. Along with this announcement, the studio declared it’s still recruiting more talent to join them on the project including an Art Director, Game Designers and more. It’ll be the first new Crysis game (not counting remasters) since 2013’s Crysis 3.

Engström’s appointment on Crysis 4 is certainly a good sign though, as we quite enjoyed our time with Hitman 3. Hopefully, we won’t be waiting too long to get our first peek at Crysis 4, which was announced at the start of this year. The game doesn’t currently have a release window or formats just yet.
