Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Another game has tossed its hat in the ring with a new battle royale mode. Developers Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment have added the gamemode to the popular online first-person shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, while also moving to a free-to-play model for the game.

The new gamemode - called “Danger Zone” - features everything you would expect from a battle royale mode. Up to 18 players drop into “Blacksite” - which is the name of the map that shrinks in diameter over time - followed by a mad dash to equip weapons and armor scattered across the map (or delivered via supply drop drone), all with the goal of being the last player standing. Players will be able to play solo, or compete as a duo or team of three.

“Danger Zone” looks to stand out a bit from the crowd of battle royale games by bringing in additional in-game missions - such as rescuing hostages placed throughout the map or eliminating high-value targets - as a way to earn cash bonuses and additional XP.

Players who purchased CS:GO before the game moved to its new free-to-play model will receive the new “Danger Zone” mode as well as be automatically upgraded to CS:GO’s premier tier known as Prime Status. Players with a Prime Status are eligible to receive an exclusive Danger Zone Souvenir: “MP5-SD | Lab Rats.” New players will be able to purchase a Prime designation by paying $14.99 USD (which is what the game originally cost before becoming free-to-play) or by playing the game itself to become Prime eligible.

With the battle royale genre being the flavor of the year, it’s not surprising to see another game round out 2018 by adding the popular gamemode. While the CS:GO audience will undoubtedly grow by a bit for the simple fact that the game is now free-to-play, it is hard to imagine that the addition of “Danger Zone” will have too much of an impact on the overall share of the market, as it will compete against the battle royale powerhouses of Fortnite, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, and even Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
