This morning CD PROJEKT RED announced that an as of yet unidentified individual has blackmailed them with the threat of releasing documents related to the developer’s upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077.

CD PROJEKT RED has not released what the individual is requesting as compensation for the files, but the company tweeted that it has no intention of entertaining the demands. They have also reported that the files are old enough to not be indicative of the current state of Cyberpunk 2077, citing further incentive as to why the individual’s demands will not be met.

The tweet mentions that an individual, or team of individuals, claim to be in possession of documents related to the design of the title and threatens to post the files online if their demands are not met. CD PROJEKT RED has reported that the documents the individual claims to have are old and largely unrepresentative of Cyberpunk 2077’s current state of development, rendering the blackmailer’s bargaining chips useless. They have informed the necessary legal authorities and have asked gamers that are looking forward to the upcoming title to avert their eyes from any such files that may spring up on the web without their consent.

Considering that CD PROJEKT RED has gone on record to their fans as citing the documents to be mostly useless at this point in development, chances are that the files will be published online at some point in the near future. The demands of the blackmailer have not been announced by CD PROJEKT RED at this time and most likely will not be.

Although the developer has largely shrugged off the importance of the documents, and in effect the threats of the blackmailer, leaked content can affect the development of a title and spoil the surprise for gamers that would wait for official releases from the game’s developers. Although CD PROJEKT RED reports that the documents are too old to really hold any sway over their actions in dealing with the threat, it would be a shame to see integral details of the game being released by a blackmailer unofficially on the Internet.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been rumored for release in 2019.
