Developer Kitfox Games has certainly shown it has the talent for range with its games. It allowed you to explore dangerous worlds in Shattered Planet before tasking you to solve murder mysteries in Lucifer Within Us. Now, Kitfox is asking you… to go on a cute date. Naturally, there’s a twist. Boyfriend Dungeon, which is now out on PC via Steam and the Epic Game Store as well as Game Pass, is a different take on the romance genre. In the game, your significant other is literally your weapon, and the romantic getaway is one of many procedurally generated dungeons.

It’s not without a hint of self-awareness that its Steam page includes a subhead that reads “What Is This.” Unique takes on romance games aren’t exactly unheard of. I mean, did you know there’s a game where you date a pigeon? Of course you should. Boyfriend Dungeon is, at its core, a game that blends top-down dungeon exploration with romantic conquest. Outside of the action, your weapon transforms into an unfathomably attractive and very single person. You can hit them up for a chat, and craft gifts you think they’ll enjoy.

Boyfriend Dungeon has seven varied weapon-folk for you to pursue, and each with their own personality and quirk. You have Sunder the talwar, who is concerned about his age, and Valeria, the dagger, who is “tired of backstabs” ironically. Kitfox stresses that it took an “inclusive, tasteful approach to gender and sexuality,” with romance including male, female, and non-binary options. You can try to date two at a time, and I wish you the best of luck on that. Of course, it doesn’t have to be romantic; you can just stay friends. Also, no, you cannot date the in-game cat, so don’t ask.

Love is in the air

As mentioned, there are seven weapons, ranging from a scythe to a lasersaber, and if you’re not happy with that, you have options. Kitfox added support for mods, in case you want to change any of the characters’ looks. It’s not clear if you can add more dating prospects via community mods, but it’s likely someone is already working on a battle ax. That would make some sense.

Boyfriend Dungeon is out now via Steam and the Epic Game Store, as well as Xbox Game Pass for PC.
