EA Motive has shown off the first in-development footage of the upcoming Dead Space remake during its promised developer livestream yesterday evening.

During the broadcast, Philippe Ducharme and Roman Campos-Oriola showed off some of the remake’s visual upgrades and new features. These include a new “flesh peeling system” for the Necromorph enemies. As gruesome as it sounds, this system will show flesh being stripped away from your enemy as you damage them. More exposed limbs will be easier to cut off with weapons like the Plasma Cutter, so there’s tactical benefits too.

As Campos Oriola explained (thanks to Video Games Chronicle for the transcription) “For us what is interesting is this opens a whole new layer of shooting and combat loop, where you can have some weapons that are better at carving through the enemies and some that are better at cleaning them and removing their flesh.”

The team also revealed that Gunner Wright will reprise his role from the sequels as Issac Clarke in the remake. This is particularly significant, as Issac didn’t actually talk in the original game and was, in fact, a silent protagonist. So of course, this means Isaac’s going to get an entire new script.

However, the team have stated they have three rules for Clarke’s new dialogue, in order to keep the core narrative faithful to the original. Firstly, Isaac will primarily only speak when spoken to. Secondly, he’ll sometimes speak in situations where it would feel weird if he was silent.

You can check out the entire Dead Space developer livestream for yourself below. The Dead Space remake doesn’t have a release date yet, but is coming for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC when it does.
