Deadly Premonition, a game that’s garnered a reputation as a cult classic, is getting a sequel on the Nintendo Switch. Rising Star Games co-founder Brjánn Sigurgeirsson hasn’t eliminated the option of releasing Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise on other platforms, but as it stands, the game will be exclusive to the Switch upon release.

Originally released for the Xbox 360 in 2010, Deadly Premonition eventually made its way to PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows. The game, while initially panned by critics, found a second life as a cult classic. Critical reception toward the game is so mixed that accolades include designations such as “Best Surprisingly Good Game” by Gamespot and “Best Worst Game” by Gamesradar.  Despite the game’s clout, however, it’s unlikely that most gamers could’ve anticipated a Switch-exclusive sequel.

Nintendo teased the game’s plot and new protagonist, FBI agent Aaliyah Davis, in its most recent Direct news presentation. After opening an investigation into a serial killer case, Davis finds herself seeking answers alongside Francis York Morgan, the FBI special agent who made his mark in the series’ first game.

While publisher Rising Star is “not discussing other platforms at this stage,” it’s possible players may see a Deadly Premonition PlayStation 4 port at a later date as Rising Star was behind the original’s PlayStation 3 port.

Deadly Premonition is one of the latest names to be resurrected by Nintendo, which is taking advantage of fan nostalgia to revamp classic favorites such as Resident Evil and Harvest Moon. In doing this, not only is Nintendo currying favor with fans of these classics but is also reaching new audiences.

It’s refreshing to see Nintendo becoming more versatile regarding which games the company will allow on its platforms. As such, it appears to be moving away from the family-friendly image that defines the brand. Fans would be hard pressed to find games such as Bayonetta and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on GameCube or Wii. As the majority of the Switch’s M-rated are standalone titles, it will be interesting to see how these games will mature on the platform. In the meantime, players can look forward to A Blessing in Disguise to tide them over.
