Fox’s Deadpool, which stars Ryan Reynolds, has set a new Thursday evening US box office record for an R-rated movie, reports Variety.
Its total of $12.7 million is more than two million ahead of The Hangover Part II from 2011 which made $10.4 million. The film opened at 2,975 locations, with screenings beginning at 7pm.
It’s now anticipated that Deadpool will make up to $70 million over the four-day President’s Weekend, a total only bettered by last year’s Fifty Shades of Grey’s $93 million.
Deadpool also launched internationally, taking $14 million in seven markets including $3.4 million here in the UK.
