Somebody, somewhere, decided that a charity event that donates money to help sick children is worth trying to take down. According to the Children’s Miracle Network, some people have been performing a DDoS attack to take down the main Extra Life charity’s website on the day of the charity stream.

But despite the concerted attempt to literally stop children from getting healthcare, Extra Life has been forging forward with the event, and the donations are still coming in.

Last year, the streaming event raised $8.8 million for charity. While the attack may have gotten in the way of some people donating, it looks like there’s still plenty of people braving the DDoS and making sure that the money is raised to help the kids. The Magic the Gathering stream on its own is well on its way to reaching its $1 million goal.

While some people might think that DDoS attacks are a good way to show off, a DDoS isn’t hard to pull off. It doesn’t show any mastery of the internet. Someone once DDoSed the CIA’s website, and that’s not because the people who did it are impressive individuals – it’s just because you can figure out how to DDoS literally anything which just a little bit of Google research.

A DDoS takes about as much effort as causing a major traffic jam by getting a few people together to slow down their cars on the freeway. It’s less brave, too, because on the freeway you can actually get identified pretty easily.

All in all, we can rest assured that the attack on the site was not as devastating as it was unnecessary and simply repugnant.
