Update: The Destiny servers are finally back online.

Original story follows.

Since early this morning, Destiny fans have been unable to log on to either the first game or Destiny 2. It’s unclear what is causing this issue, and it’s also unknown if it is impacting all Destiny players. The official Bungie Help Twitter account has been offering brief updates throughout the day to confirm that it is still investigating the issues with Destiny and Destiny 2, though no timetable has been given for when fans can expect the servers to come back online.

While it’s never a good thing for the Destiny servers to go down, this may be an especially inopportune time. That’s because Destiny 2 recently launched on a new platform, Google Stadia, and it is in fact one of Stadia’s biggest titles. Destiny 2 is one of the free games available for Stadia Pro subscribers, and so it’s safe to assume that it’s currently one of the most-played titles on the service. With the Destiny 2 servers down, Stadia players who have yet to purchase other games may simply be unable to use the service at all for now.

Not only that, but the Destiny 2 servers being down means that fans of Bungie’s looter-shooter are unable to check out Xur’s new wares for the week. For the uninitiated, Xur is a merchant in the Destiny games that only shows up on the weekends. The Destiny servers being down means that fans of the game have less time to purchase what they want from Xur this weekend, though Bungie is unlikely to extend his stay.

For the most part, Destiny 2 servers are pretty stable. It’s rare to see any widespread outages for either game. In fact, usually when the Destiny servers do go down, it’s because they were intentionally brought down by Bungie itself. Bungie sometimes announces server downtime for maintenance or to prepare for the launch of a big update and expansion. For example, Bungie took the Destiny 2 servers down ahead of the Warmind expansion’s launch.

We will update this post as soon as the Destiny servers are back online. Hopefully fans of the games don’t have to wait too much longer to jump back into the action.

Destiny 2 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
