There’s a new king in town, and players are scrambling to grab it in Destiny 2’s Season of the Dawn.

It’s called the Breachlight sidearm, and I know what you’re thinking: since when has there ever been a sidearm worth using in Destiny 2? Well, Season of the Dawn has brought about a few big changes that have catapulted the lowly sidearm from being an instant dismantle into being a true powerhouse.

Where To Find Breachlight

But first, before anything can be considered the new king it has to go up against the old one. The Recluse has been the undisputed PvE champion since its introduction, but Season of the Dawn has finally clipped the Recluse’s wings. No longer does Master of Arms provide full crit damage to the body and instead, it just provides a more reasonable damage boost. The Recluse is still good by any measure, but it’s no longer so good that no other weapon can even touch it.

The second change that happened in Season of the Dawn was an overall buff to sidearms’ target acquisition. Sidearms now have better performance at all ranges, which means that sidearms can actually out-damage a submachine gun at medium range just because the sidearm’s bullets will keep hitting the enemy’s crit-spot.

Now that you know the backstory, we can finally talk about the Breachlight sidearm. The Breachlight was introduced as a reward for completing the new Sundial seasonal activity. You must first connect the Tangled Shore Obelisk to the Sundial before the Breachlight becomes available, but after that you can select the Breachlight from the pool of available rewards at the end of each Sundial run.

What Makes The Breachlight So Great

Why would you want a Breachlight, you ask? Glad you asked. First, the Breachlight can drop with an assortment of fantastic damage perks. In the first slot, you have Demolitionist and Outlaw, two perks that will do fantastic work in reloading your weapon almost instantly with Demolitionist going the extra mile and providing grenade energy per kill. In the second perk slot, you have Rampage and Multi-Kill Clip, arguably the two best PvE damage perks in the game, as well as the new Vorpal perk.

Vorpal is a new perk that was added in Season of the Dawn. It deals bonus damage to bosses, vehicles, and Guardians that are using their Super. This means the Breachlight can deal substantially more overall damage against hard targets than regular weapons and turns it into a bit of a boss-killer when you slotted with a Boss-Spec Mod.

Breachlight also has some extremely good stats and fires a fast, high-damage, two-round burst per trigger pull. It actually does enough damage to compete with the vaunted Recluse.

Take a look at this analysis from Ehorar, a Destiny YouTuber. He took an exhaustive look at the Breachlight and found that while the Recluse is still good, the Breachlight is actually better.

Without damage buffs, the Breachlight and Recluse actually perform similarly in the damage department. With Multi-Kill Clip at max stacks, the Breachlight actually out-damages the Recluse. Moreover, the Breachlight can deal consistent damage at further away than the Recluse.

You’re also not limited to the Recluse’s perks. Since Breachlight can drop with a number of different Perks, you can keep farming the Sundial until you get the drop you’re looking for. And if you get to Rank 92 of your Season Pass, you’ll even start to get Timelost weapons with two perks in the final slot instead of one.

There’s a lot to love in the Breachlight. Try it yourself and find out why Destiny players are excited about the new sidearm.
