Destiny 2 is drastically changing the way power progression works in the game with the launch of this fall’s Shadowkeep expansion, including making it so there is no Power level cap for the season. Depending how much time players are willing to put into Destiny 2, they could theoretically infinitely increase in Power level.

While there will be a traditional level cap in Shadowkeep and Season of the Undying, the new Seasonal Artifact eliminates the level cap altogether by allowing players to get a Power Bonus by leveling up that Artifact. At Gamescom, game director Ben Womack revealed that thanks to the Artifact, there is no power cap anymore, saying, “The new Power cap doesn’t actually exist. Technically, you can go infinite with the Seasonal Artifact.”

While the exact method of leveling the Artifact has not been entirely explained yet, it appears that just playing the game and gaining XP will level up the Artifact, which in turn adds a Power bonus, one point at a time, on all characters on a player’s account. And from these latest comments from Womack, there is no limit to how much a Seasonal Artifact can be leveled to add more of that Power bonus. However, according to Womack, the limit will be the amount of time players can spend playing the game.

The other factor underlying this is the fact that each season will bring a new Seasonal Artifact thus negating the previous season’s Artifact and setting any Power bonus back down to zero. Womack explained that in Shadowkeep, players will gain level to 950 by collecting Powerful Rewards, just as players have experienced in Destiny 2 for some time now. After 950, the raid and pinnacle power sources will grant rewards up to 960. But potentially, by way of the Seasonal Artifact and its unlimited Power bonus, players could soar up to 1,000 Power level and beyond.

While many players will not have the time to level up so high, it is wise to never doubt the great lengths to which Destiny fans will go to, such as the fan who recently spent hundreds of hours farming a Lost Sector to collect Baryon Bough in a silly community challenge for a sold-out Collector’s Edition of Shadowkeep. It will definitely be interesting to watch just how high in Power the most dedicated fans can reach this fall.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep releases October 1, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
