Destiny 2 has tried a variety of interesting ways to add new content to the game including small expansions throughout the year such as Curse of Osiris and Warmind, and large annual expansions like Forsaken and the soon to be released Shadowkeep. In Year 2 of Destiny 2, Bungie attempted a new seasonal system, releasing themed content over the course of a few months, and it appears that system is not only here to stay…it’s being expanded upon in Year 3.

In Year 3 of Destiny 2, Bungie will be releasing four seasons over the course of a year that will play as limited-time events in “a single evolving world.” Throughout each season, there will be new challenges, new activities, new lore, new loots such as weapons and gear sets, and much more. And a portion of this new content will be earned through a new Battle Pass-like ranking system like the one found in Fortnite or Apex Legends.

However, Seasons will work a little different in Year 3 of D2. Players will now have the option to purchase seasons individually rather than being strictly tied to purchasing an Annual Pass. Bungie wants Seasons to be extensions of the endgame that add new limited-time activities on top of the normal Holiday events, dungeons and secret missions like Zero Hour.

When a season ends, its various pursuits and activities are going to be replaced with new ones. And the same can be said about the new Artifacts system, new upgradable items that reward unique seasonal armor mods, which are going to disappear into legend at the end of each season alongside their rewards.

Bungie has streamed lined their approach to seasons and rewards and found a new way to approach content that hopefully stops content draughts for good, and solves the current seasonal issue where old content becomes obsolete. Four new seasons in Year 3 is an increase over last years three, meaning that while Shadowkeep is a smaller expansion than Forsaken, there should be plenty to do in the first few months after launch.

In preparation for the launch of Shadowkeep, the complete collection of content from Destiny 2 Year 1 and Year 2 is currently on sale on all platforms. This sale is a great opportunity for new or lapsed players to jump back in before October, especially for those players who plan on taking advantage of the new cross-save feature.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep releases October 1 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A Google Stadia version is also in development.
